My failed attempt at pin curls.

So, I had the bright idea at around 3:00am that I'd like to pin curl my hair as I was going out for food and drinks with my friends the next day and thought it would look nice. As you can tell by the title of the post it didn't work out very well.

This was my first ever attempt at pin curls. I used bobby pins to secure the curls in place, I would have liked to have used two prong clips, below you can see the difference between them.

Two prong clips:                                       vs.                                 Bobby pins:
Obviously you can see that two prong hair clips would have definitely been a lot better to secure the curls in place. Bobby pins are definitely not as secure, I had to use between two and four bobby pins for each curl. Bobby pins were the only thing I had to use so I had to make do with what I had at hand, although I do plan to invest in some two prong clips. When I buy them I'll be sure to try and pin curl my hair again and write another post, hopefully it'll work the second time around!

Also, something I forgot to do which is crucial, is to make sure my hair is wet/damp first! If you're going to pin curl your hair please remember that step. This is probably another reason as to why the curls didn't work as well as they could have.

I have extremely long hair, it is very close to the small of my back. So even when I was taking small sections of hair the curls still ended up being very thick making them a lot harder to pin to my head. Here is a picture to give you an idea of just how long my hair is:

I started the process at around 3:00am and finished at 4:22am. It is definitely time consuming and requires a lot of patience.

So here are some pictures I took during the process:

As you can see in the last photo once all the curls were pinned in place I used a bandanna to cover them. This was to help keep them all in place and stop any from falling out whilst I slept. I slept in them for about 7 hours before taking them out the next morning. The bobby pins were extremely comfortable to sleep in, I'm not entirely sure how easy it would be to sleep with two prong clips in though.
It took me around 20 minutes to get all of the bobby pins out of my hair the next morning. The curls were not as good as I'd hoped but this is definitely a learning curve and I know where I went wrong.

This was the final product (please excuse my just woken up face):

As you can see, it worked to a certain extent but it definitely did not give the desired look I was going for. I would have liked the curls to look a lot more voluptuous. I tried to lightly brush the curls together to make them form a few big curls but sadly this didn't work.

I do suggest everyone try this at least once because it is a great way to curl and style your hair without damaging it with heat and styling products. Also, it gives a really authentic vintage inspired look!

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for attempting to pin curl extremely long hair?

MAC lipstick review: Mehr.

So after much deliberation and many swatches later in the MAC shop today I finally decided to buy a matte lipstick called Mehr.

I was definitely weary because this is not a colour I would usually use but I thought I'd venture away from my 'safe' colour which is MAC's matte lipstick Russian Red. I've been very found of browner shades lately but brown is not a shade that would suit me but I think Mehr has a slight brown tint which is perfect. It reminds me of an antique mauve colour. It is definitely a shade that can be worn every day, which is a fantastic advantage (especially when you can't be bothered to put on a red lip).

Swatch:

Once applied (without a lip liner):

I feel as if the shade goes lovely with my pale complexion. I was slightly disappointed by just how pink it looks once applied to the lip, I was hoping for it to look darker. I think if applied with MAC's lip pencil in Chicory it would accentuate the colour of the lipstick perfectly and create the desired shade I am looking for.

I love just how moisturising the lipstick is! I tend to find with matte lipstick that they dry my lips out very quickly but this definitely isn't the case with Mehr. Even without exfoliating my lips before hand it glided on smoothly with leaving any dry and flaky skin.

I feel like this would be a perfect shade for people with a lighter complexion and would definitely be a must have for spring and summer. I feel as if the pros outweigh the cons and I would highly recommend it.

The boring bits.

So, I guess I should give you an idea of what you'll find on this blog, or maybe you've already guessed it due to the title of the blog!

I intend for this blog to showcase my interests and hopefully you'll enjoy it. It is going to consist of make-up, fashion, vintage, pin up, Gothic and burlesque related things. These may include product reviews, things I've found that I think are interesting, outfit of the day posts, maybe even some hauls, various make-up looks and basically just general chit chat. I may post things that are off topic, so thing of this like a journal. It may be sporadic but for the most part it will be about the things listed above.

You're probably wondering who I am, so here is some basic information. I'm Stephanie. I'm 19 years old and I'm from Cardiff/United Kingdom. I am a psychology and sociology student and also a photographer. I'm pierced and not yet tattooed. I'm 4' 11", yes indeed I am very short.
I have a love for the Gothic subculture and also the 1950's era, both of which I take my main inspirations from when it comes to styling. I have a love for burlesque dancing and I have a huge girl crush on Dita Von Teese, but who doesn't aye? haha. I also take inspiration from the 1920's and 1940's eras too. I love both the traditional and Victorian Gothic styling. Rockabilly and psychobilly also inspires me too!

Music may also play a big part in this blog because it does tend to go hand in hand with fashion whether we like it or not. I'm into a wide variety of genres, so I'll name a few to give you an idea. Black metal, thrash metal, death metal, folk metal, death metal, punk, new wave, goth, country, blues, folk, rockabilly, psychedelic rock, indie, grunge, Motown, alternative, spoken word, doom metal and some rap/hip hop. Yes, you get the idea.

Hopefully this blog will be something you all enjoy and will be something that will continue to grow.
